Vouni Palace stands on the north-west coast of Northern Cyprus, close to the village of Lefke. Originally constructed by the Persians around 400BC, the palace was destroyed by fire after only a short history of about 100 years.

The site is in a truly magnificent cliff-top position and offers stunning views of the Mediterranean in one direction, and the heart of Cyprus in the other. Although mostly just foundations and walls remain today, the scale of the building is amazing. The palace is thought to have originally comprised just under 140 rooms and is constructed on three terraces with fountains, courtyards and shrines. Much archeological work was carried out at Vouni in the 1920s, and discoveries included gold and silver jewellery, silverware and coins.

The road to the site is narrow and steep, but easily accessible by car. Even if you have little or no interest in history, a visit here is worth it just for the views!
